Hi Dion! First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer to this interview, and welcome on the pages of Melodicrock.it! How are you?

Hi Denis, thank you for the interview. I’m doing well thanks.

Let’s start talking about your new album. I found it a fascinating melodic rock release, characterized by a classic melodic rock approach in the songwriting, but with a more modern feel perceivable in the production work. Do you agree with my view? Can you tell us also a little more about the way you write, record and arrange your music?

I pretty much agree with what you say. I love melodic rock/pop and I’m heavily influenced by the music I grew up with in the 80s and 90s, but I’m also influenced by today’s artists as well. I like adding modern touches to my music and want the production to match today’s sound.

I don’t really have a set way of writing a song. Sometimes it starts with a melody, sometimes a lyric, sometimes a chord progression, sometimes a title. It really does vary. Once I get the song idea in my head I sit at the piano and outline the basic structure of the song and record a rough piano guide track. Sometimes I start writing the lyrics at this time, sometimes after. Then I add other instruments and layers and the track begins to take shape. Once the basic instrument tracks are recorded I then record the vocal tracks and start the mixing process. Mixing the song can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. During this time I often record more tracks or take them away depending on the sound I’m going for. Plus the arrangement often changes as well. I don’t get much sleep when I’m recording an album as ideas are always swirling around in my head, but I have to say I enjoy it and always look forward to achieving the end result.

The info sheet included in the digital promo kit mentioned artists like Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi and Richard Marx as main references to your music, and I would say that they fit perfectly if I should describe your sound to other melodic rock fans. Are there more artists and bands that influenced your style in writing and arranging music?

Yes I’m influenced by many artists and I enjoy a wide range of music. I was brought up learning classical piano and there was always music from jazz to Abba to Elvis Presley playing in my parents house. As a teenager I started getting into the artists you mentioned above as well as Europe, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Queen, John Farnham, George Michael, Billy Joel plus many more. Great bands and artists like these performing incredible songs with an amazing production. These days I like the way Rob Thomas writes his songs, as well as Keith Urban, the more melodic songs of Nickelback, Gavin Degraw, Harem Scarem, Vertical Horizon, Treat, Delta Rae, I could go on and on!

After three independent releases, it’s good to see you’ve partnered for the first time with a label for the release of “Better Days”, especially with a new dynamic team just like the one of Burning Minds Music Group. Are you happy of the choice done so far?

I’m very happy so far with Burning Minds Music Group. “Zorro” and everyone involved have made me feel incredibly welcome. There are some extremely talented and friendly people involved with the label and I’m excited to be a part of it.

I am particularly intrigued by the beautiful cover art, which standing on the info received from the label has been created by one of their partners, Aeglos Art. Can you tell me more about it? Is there a connection between the music of your album and the content of the cover?

Once I signed with the label I was asked what the overall theme of the album was so the cover art could be designed. I said it was about not giving up no matter how bad things may seem at the time. There can always be hope and better days may be ahead. The cover art shows a dark wall with a doorway opening up to an open landscape with a dusty road. To me it depicts the possibility of breaking free of the darkness in your life and following the path to a brighter tomorrow. I think Aeglas Art did an amazing job.

I noticed that the album it’s available almost everywhere both on digital and physical format, included the most popular online mailorder and retailers… I would say that having a good distribution today is a key point for artists to spread their music. There is also a very nice limited edition for the die hard collectors, who had the idea for this one?

Yes the album is available just about everywhere which is great! Although I was able to distribute my previous albums to most major online stores, I just didn’t have the connections that a label like Art Of Melody Music has regarding things like promotion and other distribution areas. They also have great partners that do an excellent job. It was the label’s idea for the limited edition version of the album. It’s a fantastic idea and I’m sure the collectors out there will love it!

Is there a chance for the fans to enjoy one of your live shows without having to cross the ocean?

You know, Australia isn’t really around the corner for European fans. I’m excited to say plans are being made by the label to have me play in Italy in the first half of 2019. I can’t say too much right now, but if all things go as planned I’ll be heading over to play a show soon.

Let’s talk a little about yourself. Who is Dion Bayman out of the music biz?

Like many musicians I also have a day job as unfortunately my music doesn’t pay the bills. I’m also a big football (soccer) fan and I played the game most of my life. I have great friends, wonderful family, I’m quite a private person and probably a bit of an introvert when I’m not playing music.

MR.it: Hi Michael, first of all thank you for your time! How are you?
MK: Thank you for getting’ in touch!

MR.it: Let’s start talking about your career in the music biz: can you introduce youserlf a little bit to the Italian audience? When and how did you start to write and play music?
MK: I started playing drums when I was 8 years old in 1980.
In 1985 four of my friends and I started our first real band called Way Up. We were offered a record deal around 1991 but only recorded two songs before we decided to split in 1992.
After that I joined several bands and in 1995 I was asked to join a Danish band called The Donkeys. From that day on I was able to make a living as a drummer.
I joined the Danish Kandis in 2004 and left the band in 2012. During those eight years we released 6 studio albums which combined sold more than 1 million copies in Denmark.
Since 1995 I have played almost 200 gigs a year as a drummer besides recording my own music.
In 2012 I decided to dedicate my time to my own recordings and though I still play drums for other acts my focus remains on my own music.

MR.it: After the signing with Art Of Melody Music, your great songs are finally getting the deserved exposure in the melodic rock scene, and for what I’ve seen the feedbacks received by fans and media have been really great. Are you happy about the deal with this new Italian label?
MK: Yes! I’m so happy that I was introduced to AOM! I feel that this is the right place for me and my music.
It’s like being a part of a family and that’s a very rare relationship between artist and label these days. They have a passion for the music and they really make the artists feel that they are special to them. I’ve had a lot of record deals but this is the first time I feel it as an equal partnership.

MR.it: I found quite interesting the graphics of the album, especially the main symbol in the front cover. Can you give us some details about it? What’s its meaning?
MK: The Vegvisir is an ancient Viking symbol that provides guidance for a person who might lose/have lost his way. In this case I made my own version of the original symbol and I like the idea of letting it take good care of the songs on the album. Secondly I’m a Nordic artist so I thought it was a good way to keep something Nordic in this pretty American inspired album.

MR.it: Again regarding the graphics, I’ve noticed that they’ve been developed by Aeglos Art (https://www.facebook.com/aeglosartpainter79/), who is also the creator in the recent years of some other wonderful works. How did you come in contact with her?
MK: The Guys from AOM introduced me to Aeglos Art. I saw some of Antonella’s creations and was amazed by the work she has done. So that was a very easy decision to take! :). She’s very talented!

MR.it: “Live Your Life” (our review) contains some unquestionable gems just like the title-track, “This Town Is Lost Without You”, “Game Of Love” and “Dying Young”. Can you describe the usual process when you write a song? Where do you take your inspiration?
MK: Thank you! Well, it differs a lot. Sometimes I start writing the music and sometimes I have an idea for the lyrics and write the music afterwards.
All my lyrics are based on personal experiences in one way or another. Many of the lyrics on Live Your Life are inspired by the people around me. Live Your Life is inspired by a good friend of mine who died of cancer. Even though he struggled every day he was the most positive man you can think of. He wanted to live and he tried hard to live every day despite the fact that he was dying.

MR.it: Looking at the credits, I’ve seen that you developed quite the full album with another Danish artist, Kasper Viinberg, that we had the pleasure to admire at our “A Melodic Rock Night” live event in February. Can you introduce him to the Italian audience?
MK: Kasper is my wingman. He is a very skilled young man! A multi-instrumentalist as well and he has a great understanding for my music and what I try to achieve with it. We worked together for the first time on the Cross That Line album in 2012. On Live Your Life I also asked Kasper to be a part of the writing process on a couple of the songs. I like to be inspired by other artists and songwriters.

MR.it: Speaking again about your gig in February, I can say with no doubt that the whole audience remained pleasantly surprised about the great musicianship that you and Kasper shown together the guys of Mindfeels, another very interesting band launched recently by Art Of Melody Music. How did your artistic relationship born? Can we expect new collaboration by you together in future?
MK: I was introduced to Mindfeels by Art Of Melody Music. When I met them I instantly loved these guys! They are such nice people and they have recorded a killer album! Xxenty is still on A-rotation in my car.
I’m very happy for our new friendship!
And yes! Absolutely! We will play together again in Italy in November this year – and who knows, maybe even before that.
Also, I’m planning some recordings together with Mindfeels, starting with a single to be released this summer to promote the acoustic version of “A Melodic Rock Night”.

MR.it: I’ve seen that the cd booklet contains a QR code, that once read gives access to some cool bonus material. This in my personal opinion a great added value to those fans who support again the artists buying their music. Where did this idea come from?
MK: AOM. They thought it would be a great idea to give away some extra songs to the fans who buy the physical CD. I totally agreed. Without fans of our music we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. The more we can give to the fans, the better!

MR.it: Are you already working on your next album? Is there any new release planned for the forthcoming months?
MK: Yes. Kasper and I started recording new songs immediately after the release of Live Your Life and we have already finished half an album.
The fact that AOM is working so hard for me and my music gives me a boost of energy and I’m very inspired by the interest that has been given to Live Your Life.
We are also working on a special release that will come out second half of this year. I’m not sure I’m allowed to tell you more about it yet 🙂

Dopo un viaggio massacrante che comprende l’inabilità di trovare una fermata del bus (attività che mi ha tenuto occupata per quasi un’ora, mentre, lentamente e inesorabilmente, il mio straordinario sarcasmo veniva demolito da un sempre più ampio buco nero di disperazione) raggiungo il Circus di Scandicci, dopo essere partita da un infernalmente calda Milano. Già appena entro al locale la mia ansia viene dissipata. Sarà l’atmosfera da circolo Rock della Resistenza, di quelli portati stoicamente avanti da quella manciata che ‘ci crede ancora’, gli zii eroi che continuano a combattere perché alle nuove generazioni rimangano almeno gli stracci dell’antica gloria, o saranno le gigantografie dei Led Zeppelin, di Ozzy Osbourne e Ian Anderson che mi sorridono sornioni. Mi dirigo verso il backstage dove trovo uno stanco ma felice Andrea Dolzan (organizzatore del mini tour che ha toccato Padova-Vercelli-Firenze) che mi introduce i ragazzi.

Crashdiet – intervista a Martin Sweet ed Eric Young

Il venticinque aprile, carica di sogni e belle speranze, sono andata a intervistare i Crashdiet al Legend Club. Quanto segue è quanto sono riuscita a tirar fuori a Martin Sweet ed Eric Young.
Partiamo con la prima domanda:

MR.IT: Cosa vi ha spinto a scegliere Gabriel come cantante?

Eric: Non stavamo veramente cercando un cantante. Non pensavamo di riformarci ancora, ma siamo stati contattati da questo manager, Swen, e lui ha cominciato a cercare in zona potenziali cantanti. Mi ha mandato delle registrazioni di Gabriel e mi piaceva davvero la sua voce. L’ho fatto ascoltare agli altri, lo abbiamo incontrato e abbiamo cominciato subito a fare musica assieme.
Ci è sembrato che l’universo ci avesse mandato un segno.
Gabriel è veramente alla mano ed è piacevole lavorare con lui.
Abbiamo quattro album dei Crashdiet, che suonano in maniera abbastanza diversa fra di loro, a seconda del frontman che ha militato nei Crashdiet in quel periodo.

MR.it: Come pensate che i continui cambi di cantante abbiano influenzato la vostra musica? Come pensate Gabriel influenzerà questo nuovo lavoro?

Martin: penso che la voce di Gabriel sia in grado di ricoprire qualsiasi era dei Crashdiet, specialmente quella di Simon e David, anche se il suo periodo preferito è quello di ‘Unattractive Revolution’.
Sarà divertente, ne suoneremo un paio stasera. Non le suoniamo da un bel po’.

MR.IT: C’è una canzone del vostro repertorio in cui vi identificate maggiormente dopo tanto tempo? O magari una che non vi piace più?

Eric: Penso proprio sia Breaking The Chainz. È la mia canzone preferita, lo è sempre stata, adoro suonarla. Penso che sia una canzone che raccoglie l’essenza dei Crashdiet. Dal testo, ai riff, al mood, è una canzone che non mi stancherà mai e che avrà sempre quella ferocia che piace.

MR.IT: Come avete deciso di diventare musicisti? Cosa vi ha ispirato questo stile di vita.

Martin: Sicuramente gli Europe. Sono stati la prima band che ho ascoltato, ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra ascoltando il loro chitarrista, a 7 anni. Però, lavorare nell’ industria della musica è una cosa completamente diversa. È stato uno step successivo quello, quando ho veramente fatto uno sforzo per lavorare come musicista e renderlo qualcosa di più di una semplice passione.

Eric: Non credo di avere esattamente una band che mi abbia ispirato. In realtà la mia scoperta è avvenuta ai tempi della scuola, ho seguito i miei amici che prendevano lezioni di sassofono.
Quindi mi sono seduto e l’insegnante mi ha guardato: ‘Oh, abbiamo un nuovo batterista!’ ha detto, mi ha fatto sedere alla batteria e mi ha mostrato qualcosa di basilare e l’ho replicato.
Lui era molto contento ‘sei proprio bravo, sai?’. È quindi ho iniziato a suonare la batteria.
Più avanti ho scoperto la chitarra, con cui mi sono trovato a mio agio ugualmente. Ho cominciato a replicare tutto quello che ascoltavo dai miei artisti preferiti, che si tempi erano Nirvana, Metallica e Pantera.

MR.IT: I Crashdiet hanno sicuramente spinto l’ondata di sleaze revival nata in Svezia nei primi duemila. Cosa potete raccontarci di quel periodo?

Eric: Ricordo che in realtà l’ascesa dei The Darkness ha segnato veramente l’inizio di un rock post duemila. All’improvviso era di nuovo fico truccarsi e suonare glam rock.

Martin: Sì, non ho mai veramente ascoltato i The Darkness, ma ricordo che in quel periodo le case discografiche cercavano qualsiasi cosa li ricordasse. Hanno fatto suonare un campanello d’ allarme e tutti volevano band sul genere.
Poi anche gli Hardcore Superstar sicuramente. Ma non saprei dirti chi è stato il primo.

Eric: In quegli anni c’era un contesto molto frizzante, molte band che suonavano questo genere, e soprattutto una grande richiesta. È stato un po’ risucchiante. Non come negli anni novanta, dove nessuno curava per nulla il proprio aspetto sul palco. Penso che le persone volessero vedere di nuovo ragazzi truccati sul palco, lo abbiamo fatto, e abbiamo avuto la fortuna di avere successo. Avevamo dei buoni pezzi e li abbiamo mandati all’Universal ed è stato come buttare benzina sul fuoco. Esplosivo.

MR.IT: Potete anticiparci qualcosa sul rilascio del prossimo album?

Martin: Abbiamo questa fantasia di riuscire a farlo uscire quest’anno, ma temo rimarrà una fantasia. Un album richiede molto tempo e ancora stiamo scrivendo canzoni. Magari verso la prima parte dell’anno prossimo.

Eric: sicuramente non domani! (Ridono) sai, in Svezia abbiamo un detto: ‘Chi aspetta per qualcosa di buono, non attenderà mai troppo a lungo’. Con questo non voglio dire ai fan che aspetteranno troppo, ma non saranno delusi.

Spiego ai Crashdiet che divido sempre le mie interviste a metà, la parte seria e quella più cazzona (si può dire cazzona?)

MR.IT: C’è una domanda che avreste sempre voluto ricevere in un intervista? Qual è la risposta?

Eric e Martin: è una buona domanda! (Non rivelerò loro che non è farina del mio sacco)

Eric: Beh, nessuno mi ha mai chiesto niente a proposito del mio look e del mio make up. La risposta è: mia mamma.

MR.IT: C’è un episodio divertente delle vostre scorribande che volete raccontare ai vostri fans?

Eric: memorie del tour.
Sai sembra un cliché ma gli episodi belli non li ricordi mai, perché eri troppo ubriaco per ricordarle. Puoi chiederlo a chiunque, ma se è in grado di rispondere a questa domanda è perché sta inventando la risposta. Una volta ricordo che ci siamo fermati in un piccolo paese in Europa, e nella rotonda al centro del paese avevano una scultura formata da lettere di pietra, il nome della città. Probabilmente pesavano 150 chili l’una. E, non so chi ha avuto l’idea, ma è stato proposto di prendere una di queste lettere e portarla sul bus. Così abbiamo cominciato a spingere tutti assieme, ma fortunatamente non ci siamo riusciti, perché il tour manager ci ha fermato intimandoci di rimettere a posto la lettera.

MR.IT: Leggendo qualche vostra vecchia intervista ho letto che siete davvero degli animali da festa! Quali locali o feste ci suggerite a Stoccolma?

Martin: Beh, di veramente fighi ce ne sono due! Herby James…

Eric: e Anchor Pub! Questi sono i migliori posti in tutta Stoccolma! Sbronza garantita!

(Ridono)

MR.IT: Quali sono le canzoni che ascoltate di più in questo periodo?

Martin: direi i Ghost, ‘Rats’. Mi piace molto. E adoro veramente la funzione ‘scopri’ di Spotify. Di solito utilizzo quella e ascolto quello che mi propone. Spesso band che non avevo mai sentito, ho scoperto molti gruppi Death Metal.

MR.IT: C’è un’artista con cui vorreste collaborare musicalmente?

Martin: un producer, si chiama Desmond Child. È sempre stato il nostro sogno. È come una macchina-produci-hit. Un grande artista.

Aerodyne – Intervista
