I Def Leppard rilasceranno il cofanetto The Early Years 79-81 – che presenta i primi due album della band, On Through The Night (1980) e High’n’Dry (1981) – il 20 Marzo via UMe/Virgin. Il box set è stato prodotto dal cantante Joe Elliott e diretto dall’ingegnere del suono Ronan McHugh.

“Bene, i fan ce l’hanno chiesto e noi li abbiamo ascoltati!”, afferma Elliott. “Sono davvero entusiasta di aver rielaborato i nostri primi anni con un carico di materiale raro, tra cui il recente dissotterrato Live At The Oxford New Theatre, registrato durante il Tour del Regno Unito del 1980. E’ stato davvero un viaggio mettere insieme questo cofanetto e spero che vi piaccia ascoltarlo tanto quanto abbiamo lavorato su di esso!”.

L’album di debutto della band, On Through The Night, venne pubblicato nel 1980 e mise immediatamente in evidenza la stoffa della formazione britannica. Si classificò alla posizione n° 15 nel Regno Unito e alla n° 51 negli Stati Uniti. Presenta molti dei pezzi live favoriti dallo stesso gruppo, tra cui alcune versioni aggiornate dei primi singoli, ed è stato certificato platino nel 1989. High’n’Dry – rilasciato nel 1981 – si classificò al numero 26 nel Regno Unito e al numero 38 negli Stati Uniti., consolidando ulteriormente lo status dei Def Leppard.

Il set Deluxe a 5 CD è composto dagli album originali rimasterizzati, B-sides, rarità e versioni re-mix, sessioni Radio One, Live From Reading e il concerto inedito sopra citato.

Gli album contengono anche una instant grat-track, ovvero la sought-after Nick Tauber produced version di Rock Brigade. La canzone era originariamente stata pensata come singolo, ma non fu mai pubblicata. Oggi, 40 anni dopo, il brano viene finalmente reso disponibile ai fan (ascolta qui sotto).

The Early Years 79-81 include infine una storia dei primi due album, redatta dallo scrittore di Mojo e Classic Rock, Paul Elliott (nessuna relazione con Joe), con approfondimenti personali della band sulla realizzazione e la pubblicazione di questi primi dischi, come rare immagini e foto di cimeli dell’epoca.

Entrambi gli album sono stati rimasterizzati e disponibili in versione 1 CD, 1 LP vinile nero e vinile colorato in edizione limitata.
